As a part of our commitment to student safety and compliance, starting on September 22, 2025, we will now be requiring the EKG results as well as an interpretation from a doctor or cardiologist, to be submitted along with the Student Athletic Physical.
Miami-Dade County Public Schools Board Policy 2431 currently requires electrocardiogram (EKG) screenings for all student-athletes in grades 9 – 12. While the Florida Legislature’s “Second Chance Act” (SB 1070) will not go into effect until the 2026 – 2027 school year, our district has proactively implemented this measure to safeguard the health and well-being of our athletes.
In alignment with both district policy and the forthcoming statute, student-athletes must either:
- Provide evidence of a normal EKG result
- Receive clearance from a cardiologist or licensed physician (if the EKG result is deemed abnormal).
Below is an example of what will be required.

- The preliminary strip and machine-generated interpretation from the ECG/EKG device are not final medical determinations.
- Only a licensed cardiologist’s final interpretation/medical note — provided on the clearance form will be used to determine eligibility. Clearance can be handwritten with signature from medical provider.
Students will not be eligible for athletic participation without proper medical clearance.
Recognizing the rights of parents/guardians, the Opt-Out Form (attached below) provides families the opportunity to formally decline participation in the EKG screening program due to a documented medical exception or due to religious tenets or practices.
Please note that parents who elect this option must complete and sign the attached form below.
