As a graduation requirement, students at MAST Academy are required to complete 100 hours of Community Service by their Senior Year. The hours begin accruing in the summer after 8th grade, when a student is officially in high school. 100 hours of community service are required to receive the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program’s Academic Scholars Award.
Where can a student earn community service hours?
Community service can be completed at any non-profit organization, such as: county parks, public schools, churches, religious organizations, homeless shelters, retirement/nursing homes, Scouts USA/Girl Scouts, Special Olympics, school clubs, campaigning for political candidates or summer camps.
No student may receive credit for community service for volunteering at a for profit business, including but not limited to restaurants, lawyer’s offices, doctors offices, business & accountant offices. Community service may not be performed at a business owned and/or operated by a parent or other family member. Community service may not be performed for family and friends. No pay or material compensation may be received.
What is a Community Service Project?
Community Service Projects are well planned, organized and voluntary efforts designed by a student/students to adress a specific need in the community. Students need to write up their porject proposal on the form below and get approval, before they start, from their counselor & activities director.
When do I turn in Community Service Hours?
Seniors must turn in hours before Winter Break of their senior year.
Underclassmen (9th thru 11th grade) should turn in their hours before the end of the school year, May-June or when they have a completed a significant number of volunteer hours (50 hours or more).
Procedures:
- Download the MAST Community Service Form found below.
- Complete both sides of the form, you may put several organizations on the same form.
- Request a letter from the organization or have the organization initial the form next to their name on the form.
- Turn in the completed form with verification letters/certificates/logs to your counselor.
